Ahead of Friday's race in Austin, Texas, Tara Davis had jumped 6.73 as the longest outdoors.

Her indoor record was 6.93, a jump she succeeded in two weeks ago.

In other words, the American was in good shape when she stood on the runway in Austin last Friday.

She hit 6.97 in her third jump, a personal improvement of 24 centimeters outdoors.

But it would be even better.

In her fourth jump, she flew 7.14 meters.

With that, she polished her old record by a full 41 centimeters, and beat Jackie Joyner-Kersee's old college record of 6.99 - which stood for 36 years.
