The Spanish women's handball team will play the Olympic Games for the fifth time in their history, the third in a row, after certifying their qualification for Tokyo this Sunday by beating Argentina 16-31 on the last day of the qualifying phase.
Those of Carlos Viver were worth the draw and of course the victory that they did not hesitate to go looking for from the beginning.
With seven goals from
Marta López
at halftime, the
Guerreras
were already in the Olympic event with a 10-19 after the first half hour that, still grew after passing through the changing rooms.
Spain, with a great defense plus the stops by
Silvia Navarro
and
Darly Zogbi
to keep the Argentines at bay and give rhythm to the offensive game, did not lower the intensity level to maintain a cushion of more than 10 goals throughout the second half.
Debut in Barcelona
A triumph that allowed the
Guerreras to
prolong their Olympic relationship that began in 1992 in Barcelona.
The Olympic debut of the women's team resulted in a seventh place.
Twelve years had to wait for Spanish women's handball to return to the Olympic Games, those of Athens 2004, in which the Spanish team, then led by José Francisco Aldeguer, finished in sixth position.
Much shorter was the wait to reach the Olympic event for the third time, and it was well worth it, since on their return to the Games, the
Guerreras
hung the bronze medal in London 2012, with Jorge Dueñas on the bench.
Four years later, at Rio 2016, they said goodbye after losing 26-27 in overtime to France in the quarterfinals.
The Spanish team, current runner-up in the world, will try to fight again next summer, after sealing their pass to Tokyo this Sunday.
An Olympic passport that the men's team had already certified in January 2020 after proclaiming themselves continental champion for the second time in a row in the European Championship in Sweden, Austria and Norway.
