Ajax further strengthened the lead in the Eredivisie on Sunday.

The team from Amsterdam had no trouble with PEC Zwolle (0-2) and now have eight points ahead of PSV, which also played one more match.

Ajax still had a difficult start to the duel with PEC Zwolle, but had a well-deserved 0-2 lead halfway through hits from David Neres and Nicolás Tagliafico.

After the break, Sébastien Haller in particular got chances for more goals, but they failed to materialize.

Due to the victory over PEC Zwolle, Ajax benefits from the draw earlier in the day at PSV-Feyenoord (1-1).

The team from Amsterdam, who still have to catch up with FC Utrecht, now have eleven loss points less than the team from Eindhoven.

Ajax will play the return on Thursday in the eighth finals of the Europa League against Young Boys (kick-off at 9 p.m.).

For the team of trainer Erik ten Hag, the Eredivisie will continue next Sunday with a home game against ADO Den Haag.

PEC Zwolle will then be visited by VVV-Venlo.

Ajax starts late in the first half

Ajax coach Ten Hag could not appeal to the sick Jurriën Timber (he was replaced by Perr Schuurs) and preferred Neres to Antony on the right side of the attack.

That choice paid off in the first half.

After Davy Klaassen, Tagliafico, Ryan Gravenberch (for Ajax) and Virgil Misidjan (for PEC Zwolle) had missed some opportunities, an increasingly better playing Ajax struck for the first time after half an hour.

Neres was found by Gravenberch in the penalty area.

The Brazilian cut to his left leg and curled the ball into the far corner.

Ten minutes later, Tagliafico hit from close range after a handy pass from Dusan Tadic.

Haller forgets to score in sluggish second half

Thanks to the comfortable lead - and with a view to the Europa League - Ajax was already able to give some players a rest.

For example, Neres and Devyne Rensch were replaced halfway through by Oussama Idrissi and Sean Klaiber.

Even after the break, PEC Zwolle was unable to make a fist.

Ajax remained in charge, but in the hunt for more goals, there was a lack of conviction in the completion.

A detached Haller saw his header turned by Xavier Mous and Klaassen also encountered the PEC goalkeeper in a favorable position.

Haller missed another big opportunity twenty minutes before the end by shooting against Mous.

Ajax was also supreme in the remainder of the match, but the team from Amsterdam thought the margin of two goals was sufficient.
