The abortion virus, EHV-1, broke out during the international jumping competitions in Valencia at the end of February.

A virus that has caused many horses to become infected and several to die.

Therefore, the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) introduced a competition ban from March 8 to March 28.

But the World Cup finals, which were to be arranged between March 31, took place on April 4 in Gothenburg, were, most recently on Tuesday, still topical.

- Yes, it will be run as planned, says Göran Åkerström, International Equestrian Federation's veterinary director, at a press conference on Tuesday and continued:

- This is a disease that we had in Sweden two years ago.

And then we put together a security protocol around this.

Today came the news that the FEI is extending the competition ban by at least two weeks.

This means that the World Cup finals are canceled - for the second year in a row.

- Yes, but of course it's right.

The safety for horses and people it goes before the sport, that's all.

Then I can think it's very sad.

We want nothing more than to compete with our horses, but it must be possible to do so in a safe way.

If those who are knowledgeable in this area say that it is not possible, then so be it, says the national captain of the national jumping team Henrik Ankarcrona.

Ankarcrona says that he thinks the competition management and the organizer could arrange a safe event.

But that horses that come from outside are not appropriate.

- And that is probably what the veterinarians and others who are knowledgeable in the field, judge that it is not safe, he says.

- From a sporting perspective, it is very sad that it is canceled.
