Uli Hoeneß congratulated national coach Joachim Löw on his resignation announcement.
"It is totally the right decision," said the honorary president of FC Bayern to the "kicker".
Löw is now "no longer driven and is master of his decisions".
The 69-year-old told the TV broadcaster RTL that Löw phoned him on Monday.
"He looked totally relaxed, liberated," said Hoeness.
"The longer the conversation lasted, the more I felt that it was a good decision."
The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Tuesday morning that Löw would stop after the EM in the summer.
Hoeneß, who as a TV expert at RTL will analyze the national team's three World Cup qualifiers at the end of March, hopes that the decision will have a positive impact on the European Championship finals.
"The players will show solidarity with their coach," he said.
"You want to give him a good finish."
