A
volleyball club in
the Italian city of
Pordenone
(north) has sued a former player,
Lara Lugli
, for
damages
for
becoming pregnant
and
refuses to pay her a month's salary
, a case that has sparked a debate in the country .
Lugli communicated her pregnancy to Pordenone in March 2019, when she was competing in Serie B1 (Second Division), and he terminated her contract, she explained herself on social networks.
The athlete, currently
41
, demanded that the club pay her salary for the month of February of that year, in which she had played and which she had not yet received.
After that request and after suffering an abortion in April 2019, the club, instead of paying her, sued her because "
at the time of signing the contract she was already 38 years old
" and, in her opinion, she had to report her "possible desire to get pregnant ", complaint.
Lugli explained that the club claimed damages from him because after his departure, Pordenone "had collapsed in the championship."
His contract expired in case of "proven pregnancy"
and for that reason the club claims compensation, according to the National Association of Athletes (ASSIST), dedicated to defending the rights of athletes of different disciplines.
"It cannot be a precedent"
For this reason, the
club accuses her of hiding her intention to have children
at the time of signing the contract and therefore of "having violated good contractual faith."
"Although she is not a world-famous player,
this cannot be a precedent for future athletes
who find themselves in this situation because a pregnant woman cannot harm anyone and should not compensate anyone," she claimed.
His case has generated
controversy in the country
and ASSIST will request the intervention of the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, and the president of the National Olympic Committee (CONI), Giovanni Malagó, in the "
shameful situation
" in which Italian athletes find themselves.
For her part, the deputy of
the Democratic Party
and former president of the Lower House,
Laura Boldrini
, advanced that she will present a parliamentary interpellation on this case.
"
In Italy there is very little to celebrate and much to fight for parity,
" he said on social networks, referring to March 8.
