Max Hopp was already on the winning road.

At full throttle, the Idsteiner seemed to dash into the round of 16 of the UK Open for the first time.

The 24-year-old led 5-0 in his best-of-19 legs match against Peter Jacques.

Half the battle was done.

Even with the score of 6: 2 he looked like the sure winner and seemed to continue his run against the veteran from England.

After victories over William O'Connor (6: 3) and Vincent van der Voort (10: 6) the day before, only four legs were missing.

Surprisingly, however, this is exactly what his opponent got.

While Hopp missed too many chances, Jacques checked a 121 to 6: 6 and then even 120 points to take the lead.

The game was turned, but was turned on its head again by the German.

Hopp managed two breaks and took the lead again 9: 7.

High tension on board four, which Jacques now pushed to extremes, shortened to 8: 9 and saved himself with a break in the decider.

Here Hopp had every chance again after his opponent started the first three shots with 45, 40 and 54 points without a triple.

However, the German number two, who finished with an average of 91.9 in the end, left them out.

Jacques followed up with a 140 and a 180 and checked 42 points to win.

Clemens can write history again

Then Gabriel Clemens prevailed 10: 7 against Daryl Gurney and thus confirmed the good result of the previous year.

In 2020, the Saarwellinger was the first German to reach the round of 16 of the major tournament.

Clemens confirmed his strong form against the number eleven in the world right from the start, ended up with an average of 100.9 and checked 64 points for the deserved victory.

Now he can write history again on Saturday evening (including live on DAZN *) and move into the quarter-finals.

In the previous year he failed very close to the hurdle against Gerwyn Price with 9:10.

After Clemens had reached the semi-finals for the first time with Hopp at the World Cup in November 2020 and in December as the first German to reach a World Cup round of 16, he could set the next black, red and gold milestone on the tour.

With his success, the number 29 in the ranking also has guaranteed prize money of £ 7,500 and could climb further in the world rankings.

In addition to Gurney, Rob Cross, another top player, was eliminated on Saturday afternoon.

On Friday, Peter Wright, Gary Anderson and eleven other players from the top 32 failed in their opening matches at the only major tournament without a seed list.
