Guangzhou City presented Jean-Paul van Gastel as head coach on Tuesday.

The former Feyenoorder is with the Chinese club, which until last year was called Guangzhou R&F, the successor of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Van Gastel, whose agent said at the end of January that he was going to be the new trainer, was Van Bronckhorst's assistant until last season.

The former head coach of Feyenoord returned to the Netherlands because he wanted to be with his family again.

Van Bronckhorst led Guangzhou to eleventh place in the Chinese Super League last year.

He was supposed to be succeeded by Goran Tomic, but the Croat did not get a work visa in China.

48-year-old Van Gastel starts his first job as head coach at Guangzhou.

He was previously assistant to Van Bronckhorst at Feyenoord.

Guangzhou writes on the website that Van Gastel must lead the team to the "next phase".

The Chinese competition starts in March.

"We expect that the team will continue to grow under him. Van Gastel brings the Dutch football tradition to the team. Everyone defends and everyone attacks."
