Chelsea started the eighth finals of the Champions League with a win over Atlético Madrid on Tuesday.

Olivier Giroud scored the only goal with a nice bicycle kick: 0-1.

Because Chelsea could not travel to Spain due to corona restrictions, the game was played in Bucharest.

The return is on March 17 in London.

Chelsea had a slight predominance for a long time, but opportunities were scarce for both teams.

Thomas Lemar was threatening on behalf of Atlético, but the French midfielder was a few centimeters short to tap in the cross.

On the other side, a hard shot from Timo Werner was countered by Atlético keeper Jan Oblak.

Even after the break there was hardly any spectacle, until the 68th minute.

Giroud scored with a nice bicycle kick, but clearly did so in an offside position.

The goal was therefore rejected by the German referee Felix Brych, but the VAR pointed out to him that Giroud got the ball through Atlético defender Mario Hermoso and that the goal was therefore valid.

Ziyech comes in at Chelsea in the final phase

Fifteen minutes before time, Hakim Ziyech made his appearance at Chelsea.

In the previous six matches, the former Ajax player was only allowed to come in twice from trainer Thomas Tuchel.

Ziyech was unable to distinguish himself, also because Chelsea limited themselves to consolidating the lead.

The Londoners needed quite a few offenses for that.

Atético coach Diego Simeone complained about this during the arbitration and got a yellow card himself.

Chelsea, the number five in the Premier League, gave Atlético a new downer.

The league-leader of La Liga won only one of his last five matches and lost a large part of his big lead.
