After his announced retirement as head of sport at FC Schalke, Jochen Schneider defended the much-criticized personnel policy of the past few months.

Many transfers made and not made had to do with the tight financial situation of the bottom of the table in the Bundesliga.

In an interview with members of the Schalke online format “MitGEredet digital” on Tuesday evening, Schneider also admitted that the separation from Vedad Ibisevic had been a mistake.

The relationship between the attacker and the then coach Manuel Baum was "problematic".

Schalke had separated from Ibisevic, who had only come to Gelsenkirchen last summer.

"It was a mistake to suspend Vedad," Schneider said now.

"I won't let anything come of Vedad."

Schneider also resisted having given Breel Embolo 2019 below value to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

"That was the market value," said Schneider about the eleven million euros that Schalke had received for the Swiss international striker.

Embolo was signed by FC Basel in 2016 for a good 25 million euros.

“The point is that Breel Embolo was bought too dearly,” Schneider continued.

The Royal Blues had to let go of Jonjoe Kenny, on loan from Everton in the preseason last summer, because they couldn't afford the right-back.

In 23 months, the crashed former top club have just bought three players: Ozan Kabak, Benito Raman and Bernard Tekpetey.

Because of this, he “didn't complain, but you have to see the possibilities we worked with”.

Schalke, who were runner-up in 2018, suddenly had a major financial problem after almost relegation in 2019, which increased again due to missing the 2020 European Cup and the Corona crisis and led to rigorous austerity measures.

For example, the club had to withdraw an offer to extend the contract from service provider Daniel Caligiuri last summer.

Caligiuri then moved to FC Augsburg.

Despite the circumstances, Schneider says he regrets not having pushed harder for transfers.

"I should have listened more to myself than to others when it came to transfers," said Schneider, who came to Gelsenkirchen in 2019 as head of sports and was recently criticized for months.

On Tuesday, the Revierklub announced that it would part with Schneider as soon as a successor was found.

At the latest at the end of the season, however, the 50-year-old will end up at Schalke.
