Under Iranian law, a husband can stop his wife from traveling outside the country.

This team took advantage of Samira Zargari's husband, when she was to travel to Italy to lead the country's four female giant slalom skiers in tomorrow's World Cup competition in Cortina.

This was reported by Iranian media, quoted by the news agency AP.

This is not the first time a woman has been stopped from an international sports championship.

As recently as 2015, Niloudfar Ardalan was stopped from the Asian futsal championships, after her husband took care of her passport.
