The French team holds its first gold medal in these alpine skiing world championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo (Italy).

Mathieu Faivre, 29, won the parallel individual slalom on Tuesday, an event which made its appearance in the competition.

The isola 2000 skier, who has so far only had one World Cup victory (Val d'Isère giant in December 2016), dominated the Croatian Filip Zubcic in the final by 48 hundredths of a second at the end of two sleeves.

The Swiss Loïc Meillard, big favorite, benefited from the fall of the German Alexander Schmid in the second round to clinch 3rd place, his 2nd bronze medal after the combined Monday.

Worley saves bronze

Among women, Marta Bassino, 24 and victorious over four of the five World Cup giants contested this winter, narrowly won in the final against the Austrian Katharina Liensberger.

France, however, secured their second medal of the day thanks to Tessa Worley, who beat American Paula Moltzan for bronze.

The morning qualifications had been fatal to several favorites including the Slovakian Petra Vlhova, victorious in the only women's parallel of the season, the Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami and the Austrian Marco Schwarz, crowned Monday on the combined.

Others had decided to ignore this competition, such as the French Alexis Pinturault, the Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen and the American Mikaela Shiffrin.
