Alexander Zverev was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open due to a defeat against the defending champion and world number one Novak Djokovic.

The 23-year-old from Hamburg lost to the eight-time Melbourne winner from Serbia on Tuesday after a tough fight in a high-class match with 7: 6 (8: 6), 2: 6, 4: 6, 6: 7 (6: 8).

In the previous year, Zverev made it among the last four players in the Grand Slam tournament.

In the semifinals on Thursday, Djokovic surprisingly meets Russian qualifier Aslan Karazew.
