A new champion is joining the list of Open Sud de France competitors, and not the least: Scotsman Andy Murray, who kicked off his season in a Challenger tournament in Italy last week, will return to the main circuit on next week in Montpellier (Hérault), the organizers announced on Monday.

"Andy Murray, former world number 1, multiple Grand Slam winner and double Olympic gold medalist, will be present at the Open Sud de France 2021", write the organizers of the tournament, which takes place at the Sud de France Arena from February 22 to 28, on their Facebook account.

On the television

The 33-year-old Scotsman, a three-time Grand Slam winner, failed Sunday in the final in Biella, northern Italy, against Ukrainian Illya Marchenko, 212th in the world after briefly stepping into the Top 50 in 2016 Andy Murray struggled with a pelvic injury that compromised his attempts to revive his career after hip surgery.

He only played seven official games in 2020 also due to the five-month suspension from the ATP Tour due to the pandemic.

His hopes of returning to Melbourne this year were dashed when he tested positive for the coronavirus last month.

Among the French competing in the Open Sud de France, there is Richard Gasquet, the regional of the stage, but also Ugo Humbert and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The Spaniards Roberto Bautista Agut, favorite of the tournament, and Pablo Carreno Busta or the Belgian David Goffin, semi-finalist in 2020, will also be in the game.

As the tournament takes place behind closed doors, tennis fans will be able to follow the competition on television: it will be broadcast on BeIn Sports channels, and the free regional channel Via Occitanie, on TNT.
