The city of Melbourne will begin five days of confinement to try to stop a coronavirus outbreak, but the Australian Open tournament that takes place there will continue behind closed doors, at least until next Wednesday.

The Prime Minister of the State of Victoria, Daniel Andrews, announced that this confinement was necessary to stop a "hyper-infectious" outbreak of infections by the British variant of the coronavirus.

The outbreak appeared in one of the hotels in which several players and participants in the Australian Open were quarantined.

So far, 13 people have been infected, including hotel staff and their families.

The Prime Minister of the state of Victoria, whose capital is Melbourne, specified that the venue for the tournament will be considered a "workplace" that can continue to operate with a limited number of employees.

This means that the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the 2021 season, will continue but behind closed doors.

Players will compete in a health bubble, Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley reported on Friday.

"The game is going to continue. A health bubble will be established for the players. What we've heard is that the players just want to go ahead and play," he said.

"Only players and their teams, as well as staff members who cannot telecommute, will be allowed to be on site," he added.

Tournament organizers have also announced that the tour will continue without spectators, at least for the next five days.
