Lars Lagerbäck was a great success as coach of the Icelandic men's national team when, among other things, he led them to a sensational quarter-final place in the European Football Championship 2016.

After three years as the national team captain for the Norwegian national team, he is now returning to Iceland.

72-year-old Lagerbäck will be the new technical adviser and will support the management staff, the Icelandic Football Association writes on its website.

- I am very happy and look forward to working with the Icelandic national team again, because I have many good memories from my time as the team's coach, Lagerbäck says in a press release.

Due to the corona pandemic, Lagerbäck will begin its work remotely.

- Lars has enormous experience that will benefit us in future projects.

He knows the Icelandic national team environment and our culture, says national team coach Arnar Vidarsson.
