The two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso had an accident.

As his racing team Alpine announced on Thursday, the Spaniard was involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland.

Alonso was conscious and in good shape.

The 39-year-old is scheduled to undergo further medical examinations on Friday morning.

Alpine, the former Renault team, announced that it would not provide any further information for the time being.

Alonso is a passionate cyclist.

After a break, the man from Oviedo will start this season for Formula 1 Team Alpine alongside Frenchman Esteban Ocon.

As the Italian newspaper "Gazzetta dello Sport" wrote, Alonso was hit by a car while he was training on his bike near Lugano.

The 2005 and 2006 world champion was immediately taken to a local hospital.
