Luleå University of Technology will, together with the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK), begin a collaboration on performance development in sports.

The collaboration has three main tracks: performance technology, performance analysis and material optimization.

- The first part of the investment includes ski technology, increased knowledge and development of skis, coatings, structure and embankment - but also the connection between technology and performance.

For example, measurements with sensors can increase knowledge of how a skier can perform to the maximum depending on conditions and equipment, says Roland Larsson, professor of machine elements at Luleå University of Technology.

The new lab includes a new measuring site for practical application and a new workshop for ramparts and grinding of skis in Lindbäcksstadion in Piteå.

Rickard Larsson, the former dean in the cross-country national team, will be the new head of the practical activities.

Rikard Grip, who is general secretary of the Biathlon Association, is positive about the new collaboration.

- SOK's and Luleå University of Technology's investment in technology and skis is extremely positive, we are very strong in materials already today, but for the future WC and Olympics we will be the best, says Grip.

The cross-country manager of the ski association, Daniel Fåhraeus, is hopeful that the collaboration will help Sweden to remain one of the world's foremost cross-country ski nations.

- The development in both materials and training is fast and this investment is important for Sweden to be able to be at the forefront and continue to be able to drive cross-country skiing forward in today's razor-sharp competition, he says.
