They had hoped for better times when they pulled the rip cord in December, fired Lucien Favre and promoted Edin Terzic to the new head coach.

The hoped-for success, however, the sustainable trend reversal, did not materialize.

It was only last weekend that all those who like Borussia Dortmund got it in mind: In Freiburg, they lost their eighth season with a 2-1 defeat, with a full 16 points behind the leaders Bayern Munich.

It's not sporty.

But that's not all.

With the starving appearances of the team, there is now also bad economic news.

It became known on Monday that BVB closed the first half of the 2020/2021 financial year with a loss of millions.

As the listed club announced, BVB posted a minus of 26.3 million euros from July to December 2020.

Last year there was a small profit of three million euros.

Borussia Dortmund also reported a turnover of 177.4 million euros.

That sounds like a lot at first - in the comparison period before the corona pandemic, however, sales were still at 236.6 million euros.

According to the club, the decline in sales in the midst of the corona pandemic is largely due to games in front of a ghostly backdrop of around 22 million euros, less TV marketing (14.4) and income from stadium operations such as catering and conferences (23, 9).

In the Corona crisis, BVB was able to reduce personnel costs by 9.2 to 111.5 million euros in the first half of the year.

At the general meeting of BVB shareholders in November, managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke had assumed that Borussia Dortmund KGaA would lose EUR 70 to 75 million for the year as a whole.
