They may have played in numerical superiority from the 14th minute, the Welsh have in all the trouble in the world to get out of it against Ireland (21-16), Sunday, on the first day of the VI Nations tournament .

The hotly contested match ended in some confusion after several minutes of added time.

Gareth Davies initially opted to kick a ball 10 seconds from the end of regulation time, returning the ball to the Irish, as victory stretched out its arms to his people.

Ireland managed to get the ball back into the opposing camp and got a penalty.

But Billy Burns, who wanted to find a touch in the opposing 22 meters, unscrewed his kick which went into the dead ball zone, depriving his team of its last cartridge.

Ireland-France next weekend

Two last actions like the match, a bit messy.

The Irish were determined to put an end to eight unsuccessful years at Cardiff, but that ambition was tarnished by the quarter-hour mark, so when Peter O'Mahony was sent off for putting a shoulder to the the head of opposing pillar Tomas Francis.

This fact, and a second penalty from Leigh Halfpenny, who had given a 6-point advantage (6-0), seemed to have put the Welsh on the right track.

But it is on the contrary Ireland which then took the ascendancy in the game, going as far as leading 13-6 thanks to a test by Tadgh Beirne (36th).

Fortunately for the Welsh, George North then Louis Rees-Zammit set the record straight in the second half.

The winners of the day will travel to Scotland, which went to England on Saturday (11-6) to win for the first time in ages, next weekend.

Ireland will receive a XV from France which made short work of the Italians (10-50).
