Uruguayan soccer player Santiago

Morro

García was

found dead in his home

in the Argentine province of Mendoza, sources from Godoy Cruz, the last club he played for, reported this Saturday to Efe.

The

30-year-old

striker

was without a team, since the team president, José Manzur, had stated that he would not take it into account for this 2021 despite having a contract until June.

The Uruguayan player played for that club for the last five seasons.

After being separated from the squad, he was analyzing options with his representative Daniel Fonseca to continue his career, but, according to the same sources, he was trying to overcome a

deep depression

.

Santiago García still lived in Mendoza and missed his family, who live in Montevideo, and who he did not see due to the restrictions in Uruguay due to the coronavirus pandemic.

His options for the future went through Vélez and the La Plata team Estudiantes and Gimnasia.

The three clubs had shown interest in hiring the striker, who also valued a possible return to Uruguay or go to Chile or Brazil.

Trajectory

García had made his debut at Nacional in Montevideo (he had two stages: 2008/11 and 2013/14) and in his career he passed through Athletico Paranaense from Brazil (2011/12), Kasimpasa from Turkey (2012/13) and River Plate from Uruguay (2014/16), before disembarking at Godoy Cruz.

The case was in charge of the prosecutor

Claudia Ríos

, who determined the investigation in the house where Santiago García lived to find out the cause of death.

With 51 goals,

García is the top scorer in the history of Godoy Cruz in the First Division

, although in the last Copa Diego Maradona had played six games, three of them as a starter and had not scored.

He was also the top scorer in the Uruguay Apertura Tournament in 2010 with 15 goals and in the 2017-18 Argentine Super League with 17 goals.

The news shocked Argentine soccer.

"You were a hero, you were beaten, you were a friend and family, you were everything a person wants to be when he catches a ball. Thank you very much for so much Morro," Godoy Cruz wrote on Twitter.

"We regret with deep sadness and shock the death of the Uruguayan player Santiago Damián García. Our condolences to his family and friends. RIP," the Uruguayan Football Association tweeted.

Nacional de Montevideo, the team that formed him in his country, also sent their condolences through their social networks.

"There are no words or consolation. Immense sorrow for the death of one of the most beloved players and fans in the recent history of Nacional. We all mourn for" El Morro, "the Uruguayan club said in a message on Twitter.
