"We will not bring it until the market is mature" they

commented to us some time ago in Toyota Spain when we asked why they did not bring the hybrid plug-in version (or PHEV or 'plug in') of the Prius that was sold in other markets.

Well, the wait is over: last year passenger car registrations with this technology grew by 213.8%, to 23,301 units and

Toyota dealers already have the new Prius PHEV for sale.

It replaces the self-recharging hybrid model and can be purchased from 33,900 euros.

In the current range of the manufacturer, it is its first 'plug-in' model and in a few months it will be added to the RAV 4 PHEV

which, curiously, is the basis of the Suzuki Across that this last brand has been selling in Spain for many months.

It happens that Suzuki was very urgent to launch it to reduce CO2 fines in Europe.

And Toyota didn't need it.

In any case, it is not the first 'plug in' in the house.

In 2008 there was a test fleet of 75 units of the 2nd generation Prius

with this technology;

and at the end of 2010 it was also marketed on the third evolution, of which a few units were sold in Spain.

The model that now arrives has some changes in the front design,

it now has 15-inch wheels (for 17 the pure hybrid Prius) and is seven cm longer (it measures 4.64 meters), to make room for a battery of larger size.

Made of lithium-ion, it has a gross capacity of 8.8 kWh and is located behind the seats in the lower part of the boot.

This means losing almost 150 liters of luggage volume (we stayed at 354, a fair figure) and, on the contrary, gaining more than 200 kilos of extra weight.

With 45 km in electric mode and label ZERO

Everything is to enjoy many more kilometers using only electricity:

45 have been homologated according to the WLTP cycle, being able to move in that mode at speeds of up to 145 km / h.

This allows the approved average consumption to be between 1.3 and 1.5 liters, with CO2 emissions of between 28 and 35 grams per kilometer.

In addition, it means having the ZERO emissions label from the DGT, with all the advantages that this entails.

Until now, that distinction has only had the fuel cell Mirai.

The drive unit is made up of a 1.8-liter gasoline engine and two electric ones.

They give a maximum of 122 horses, although one of the novelties is that the two electric blocks can be added to move the car,

giving in this case 20 HP more than before and making the car accelerate more forcefully.

This happens when we have

the EV driving mode (100% electric) selected.

If we have a full battery, it is recommended for highways and highways.

With the

'EV City' mode,

for low emission zones and lower speeds, only the main electric motor is needed.

Finally, if it is about obtaining maximum electrical efficiency when traveling and once the electric battery is discharged, there

is the 'HV' (hybrid).

To refill the battery, the most powerful action is to plug it into the network.

Given that the maximum load power it supports is 3.3 kW,

the minimum time will be in about two hours on poles that give that or more.

On a conventional household outlet, it would be about four hours.

But it can also be filled when decelerating or braking, with the regenerative system that all electrified cars have.

And as a great novelty,

with solar panels placed on the roof.

Up to 1,000 kilometers a year 'for the face'

It's a formula that was used in the third-generation Prius in 2009 and is now offered as an option.

It is the only model for sale in Spain with this element, which allows the generation of electricity both with the car stopped and running.

In the first case, the energy that is created goes to a specific battery and from here to the large one that feeds the electric motors

;

or directly to this if the first one is already full.

But if the Prius is in motion, the electricity goes from the 'solar' battery to the auxiliary one that powers electronic elements such as the instrument panel or the electric windows.

In this way, that energy is not consumed from the main one, reducing autonomy.

According to Toyota, solar panels can provide up to a maximum of 1,000 kilometers of autonomy per year.

To this innovation must be added

a heat pump air conditioning, up to 2.5 times more efficient than an electrical system

and that does not require the thermal engine to be connected -above -10ºC-, or the battery heating system electric, which guarantees that its autonomy and performance

are not affected by low temperatures, even down to -20ºC.

Three finishes and a renting for 450 euros per month

The new Toyota is sold in three finishes:

Advance, Solar and Luxury.

The first (33,900 euros)

already brings alloy wheels, LED matrix headlights, heated front seats, bi-zone climate control, rear view camera, keyless entry and start system, navigator and the latest version of the Toyota Safety Sense, which groups together numerous driving assistance systems.

Then, for 37,150 euros you can opt for the Solar finish, with the panels on the roof, or the Luxury,

which adds leather upholstery and electric adjustment on the front seats, wireless charger for the mobile, information projected on the windshield over the Advance , advanced parking aid and blind spot detector.

The prices include a promotional discount of 4,000 euros, but not the aid of the Moves II (between 1,900 and 2,600 euros for a plug in like this).

On the contrary, we can increase them based on options such as metallic paint (between 600 and 825 euros) or an extension of the guarantee or maintenance services.

You can also resort to traditional financing (from 275 euros / month) or opt for

a renting for individuals that, for 450 euros per month, comes with all services included, except the change of tires and fuel.

It is contracted for 48 months with 10,000 km per year, with a first installment of 1,900 euros.

But Toyota's finance company keeps the car at the end of the contract.

Finally, and to facilitate the domestic recharging of the vehicle,

different types of chargers

are offered

whose price ranges between 650 and 2,350 euros,

in the latter case one for fleets that allows connecting two vehicles at the same time.
