What happens behind the walls of the prison in Dezful, Iran, rarely gets outside.

Watchtowers are enthroned above the isolated fortress in the south-west of the country, less than 100 kilometers from the border with Iraq.

But on Monday there was news from prison that went around the world: Mehdi Ali Hosseini, 30, was executed in Dezful.

He died on the gallows.

One detail makes this case special: Hosseini is the second Iranian wrestler within a few months to be killed in a state prison. His death joins the long list of executed athletes in Iran and other countries. The execution raises the question of what consequences sports associations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) draw from it.
