Alejandro Gómez, one of the best long-distance runners in Spanish athletics, died this Sunday at age 53 in Vigo after not being able to overcome a brain tumor that was diagnosed in the middle of last year, the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) has confirmed .

"Fight to the end. In the mud and in life. Your sporting legacy will be part of our history forever. Your personal legacy has been a lesson and an inspiration," said the RFEA.

During the last six months, the athlete from Vigo had undergone treatment to delay the outcome of the disease.

During his extensive career, between 1985 and 2005, he competed in 17 Cross Country World Cups, a record not yet surpassed in our athletics.

Between 1987 and 2005

In all, he won five team medals (the two juniors and three more overall, his best being sixth in 1989 at Stavanger).

In addition, in the European cross country he was runner-up in 1995 and achieved two more team medals (1994 and 1995).

In total, he was 36 times international (1987-2005), participated in three Olympic Games (1988 in 5,000 meters and 1992 and 1996 in 10,000 meters), four World Championships (1991, 1995, 1999 and 2003) and three European Championships (1990, 1998 and 2002, the latter two in marathon, where he achieved the fifth and sixth position at the individual level and silver and gold for teams respectively).

That great debut in Rotterdam

At the national level, he achieved two absolute titles in cross country (1989 and 1995), five in 10,000 meters (1989, 1991, 1993, 1996 and 1996) and two in half marathon (1992 and 2003).

In half marathon and marathon, he also achieved the records of Spain in each of these distances.

In 1992, in South Shields (1:01:20) and in the 1997 Rotterdam marathon (2:07:54) which is still the second best mark of a Spanish rookie in this distance.
