That's half the capacity of Melbourne Park.

During the last five days of the tournament, 25,000 spectators will be admitted as fewer matches are played.

"This means that during the 14 days of the tournament, there will have been 390,000 spectators here at Melbourne Park, which is about 50 percent of the average over the past three years," said Victoria's Sports Minister Martin Pakula according to Reuters.

- It will be the largest audience that has witnessed an international competition in many, many months, says Pakula.

Released from quarantine 23.59

The first players will be released from the quarantine at 23.59 local time on Saturday night in Melbourne.

More than 1,000 players, leaders and officials who arrived on one of the 17 international flights two weeks ago have been quarantined.

Most have been allowed to train for up to five hours a day, but 72 have been in strict quarantine and have not been allowed to leave their hotel rooms.

Nine have had or have covid-19.

In the coming week, both a WTA and an ATP tournament will be played in Melbourne as a warm-up for this year's first Grand Slam, which begins on February 8.

Three Swedes come to play Australia: Elias Ymer, who has been in strict quarantine, his brother Mikael Ymer and Rebecca Peterson.
