On January 18, the news came that the hockey World Cup will be moved from Belarus.

But there is still no new host country for the championship, which is planned to start in May 2021.

- Due to the situation with the coronavirus, it is probably better for us to have one host country, not two.

We will make a decision next week, says IIHF's chairman René Fasel.

After the IIHF withdrew from Belarus and Minsk, a decision was expected this week.

- We need more time to familiarize ourselves with all the details and technical issues, says Fasel to Tass.

Latvian Riga, which would have co-hosted the World Cup with Minsk, Bratislava and Danish Herning are the alternatives.

If Riga is to take over the entire World Cup, another arena must be built to the existing one.

-We are talking to both Bratislava and Herning if they will be able to receive 16 teams.

In Latvia, it will not be so easy to receive 16 teams, because there we have to build a temporary arena.

We are still talking to all three and do not rule out that the World Cup will be held in two countries, says Fasel.

The most recent World Cup tournament for men, 2019, was played in Bratislava.

The Ice Hockey World Cup is scheduled to be played from May 21 to June 6 and Sweden would have played its group game in Minsk.
