First unexpected loss in the second year of the pandemic.

The Dutch

Tom Dumoulin

, one of the riders with the most cache, has announced that he is temporarily retiring from cycling because he is not satisfied with his performance and prefers to take time off to rethink his professional career.

A decision that has caused enormous surprise not only in the peloton, but in his own group, the Jumbo-Visma.

The 30-year-old runner assures that during the time of absence he will not receive salary from his team.

As reported by wielerflits.nl.

Last night the runner communicated to those in charge of the Jumbo-Visma, a formation that is concentrated

in Alicante

, that he needed to retire for a few months to find out what he wants to do with his future and find an answer to the question of whether he still wants to be a professional cyclist.

The Dutchman, first classified in the 2017 Giro and one of the most qualified time trialists, had been considering his retirement for a few weeks but did not want to make it public until yesterday.

This same week he had commented that he was looking forward to the start of the season, even that he wanted to

participate in the classics.

"I think spring is always a very enjoyable time. Everyone is eager, including myself, to start over. I must admit that in terms of results it has never been my best time. This will be my 10th year as a professional cyclist and I've never really shone in spring. I hope and think every year that this year will work. I'm going to try again, "he said.

His plans included the Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milan-San Remo, E3 Saxo Bank Classic and the Tour of Flanders.

Then he planned to go to the Tour de France to find the podium and help

Primoz Roglic

, as he did last year.

Dumoulin started to shine in the 2015 Vuelta, where he finished sixth and led on several rounds.

He was

first in the 2017 Giro

and second in the 2018 edition and also second in the 2018 Tour. He has been a world time trial champion in 2017. His career began to stall in 2019 due to an injury from a fall at the Giro .

His best performance was made last year as a Roglic gregarious
