Rico Verhoeven hopes that Hesdy Gerges will be appointed as his new opponent for the title fight on January 30.

GLORY's world heavyweight champion saw Jamal Ben Saddik drop out on Tuesday with a back injury.

"It's very simple now. There has to be a new opponent and I saw on social media this morning that someone with a big mouth has come forward again: Hesdy Gerges. I have not forgotten what he did during the press conference after Badr (Hari, ed. ) said ", Verhoeven told

Verhoeven is referring to a moment in December 2019, after he had won against Badr Hari, who had to retire with an injury.

At the press conference, Gerges said that Hari was the better of the two, which resulted in a furious reaction from Verhoeven (see video).

"He is now the perfect opponent", said Verhoeven about Gerges.

"He has won his last race well, is fit and has been bombarding me for months. Now he should take his chance. It's up to GLORY to set this up today."

Amsterdammer Gerges already faced Hari in a prestige fight in March 2018.

Hari won that showdown in Rotterdam on points.

Verhoeven has been world heavyweight champion since 2014.

He defended his title more than a year ago for the ninth and so far last time.
