Robin van Roosmalen hopes to be able to return to the ring.

The former kickboxing world champion was involved in a serious traffic accident last week.

"Robin has now returned home. The operation went very well", Van Roosmalen's trainer Hicham Elgaoui told NU.nl on Tuesday.

"We assume he will make a full recovery and can fight again in the future."

Van Roosmalen and his sister stopped their car on the hard shoulder of the A2 on Wednesday when they were hit by a truck.

Melissa van Roosmalen died on the spot.

She will be buried in Den Bosch on Friday.

The kickboxer was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his back and hip.

The 43-year-old driver of the truck was arrested by the police.

reported on Thursday that he is free, but is still a suspect in the case.

The 31-year-old Van Roosmalen was champion in the lightweight of kickboxing association GLORY from 2014 to 2016.

After that, he was a featherweight champion for two years.

When he lost that title at the end of 2018, the Brabander made the switch to MMA bond Bellator.
