Expedition. 10 Sherpas take down the last frontier of mountaineering: the winter K2
Just an hour after it was announced that a group of 10 Sherpas had managed to ascend K2 in winter for the first time, the death of the Spanish climber Sergi Mingote, his companion on his expedition in the Pakistani mountain, was confirmed.
Mingote, who had separated from the Nepalese team, was
descending from field 3 to base camp together with Chilean Juan Pablo Mohr
, when he suffered an accident that took his life.
This was confirmed in his social networks by the Minister of Health
, "shocked by the news of the accident that has ended the life of a magnificent athlete, former socialist mayor of Parets and personal friend."
Early in the morning, the
Seven Summit Treks
, in charge of the entire project, indicated that Mingote had been left unconscious and had to be
evacuated from the mountain by helicopter
, although no further details of what happened were known.
On a placid day for K2's usual winter conditions - around 35 below zero and no wind - Mingote and Mohr had already passed Camp 1 when the incident took place
