Anish Giri and Magnus Carlsen started the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee on Saturday with a victory.
The Dutchman Giri defeated the young Norwegian Aryan Tari.
World champion Carlsen was too strong for the Iranian Alireza Firouzja.
Thirty-year-old Carlsen won the tournament a total of seven times.
Last year, the Norwegian finished second behind Fabiano Caruana.
The defending champion got no further than a draw on Saturday against Jorden van Foreest, the second Dutch participant.
The two Dutchmen will play against each other on Sunday.
The 26-year-old Giri has already finished second three times, Van Foreest (21) was the best Dutchman in fourth place on his debut last year.
The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is the second major international chess tournament since the corona crisis and ends after thirteen rounds of play on January 31.
The 83rd edition of the tournament will be corona proof.
Only the fourteen top chess players participate.
Visitors are not allowed in the Moriaan in Wijk aan Zee.
