Election of Barça president postponed due to Covid-19

FC Barcelona will have to wait a little longer before knowing the name of its next president.

The club announced on Friday that the election for Barça, initially scheduled for January 24, would be postponed due to Covid-19.

The epidemic has prompted Catalonia to take severe measures to restrict movement.

And the regional authorities warned Friday during a remote meeting with the club that no exceptions would be allowed to allow the holding of this poll.

The election, for which no new date has been set, is crucial for Barca who are facing both financial and sporting difficulties.

"The club notes the impossibility of organizing the election on the scheduled date due to mobility restrictions decreed by the government," Barça said in a statement.

The club asked the Generalitat, the government of the autonomous region of Catalonia, to authorize postal voting for the election of its president by its 110,000 “socios” (supporters-shareholders).

No one at the helm for the end of the transfer window

Joan Laporta, who previously held the post from 2003 to 2010, Victor Font, Toni Freixa are among the main candidates to succeed Josep Maria Bartomeu, who resigned in October following a summer marked by uncertainty over the future of Lionel Messi.

The Argentine star had announced his wish to leave his club forever, before staying.

The future of Messi, who will be free to go when his contract ends in June, remains at the center of all concerns.

The postponement of the election means that there will be no new president at the helm at the end of January for the last week of the winter transfer window.
