Former GLORY champion Robin van Roosmalen was seriously injured in a serious traffic accident on the A2 near Utrecht on Wednesday.

His sister did not survive the accident.

Van Roosmalen (31) and his sister Melissa (29) were standing with their car on the hard shoulder when they were hit by a truck.

Van Roosmalen is seriously injured in hospital, his sister died of her injuries there.

Van Roosmalen is conscious, Hicham Elgaoui of the Bossche gym Fighting Talents, where the martial artist and his sister trained.

"Robin will be operated on tomorrow," Elgaoui told

"Fortunately he can still move everything. He is a fighter, he has a strong body."

De Bosschenaar became world champion in both the lightweight and the featherweight at kicksport association GLORY.

In 2018 he lost his championship belt after a lost fight with the Thai Petchpanomrung Kiatmookao in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

After that, Van Roosmalen said goodbye to kickboxing and switched to MMA organization Bellator.

GLORY expressed condolences on Twitter on Wednesday evening to Van Roosmalen and his sister.

The driver of the truck has been arrested by the police.

There was a lot of traffic disruption on the A2 after the accident.

The lanes between Den Bosch and Utrecht were closed for hours.

The GLORY family is heartbroken to learn of Melissa Van Roosmalen's passing and critical injuries sustained to Robin Van Roosmalen in a car accident.
