Veteran Japanese striker Kazuyoshi Miura, who will turn 54 in February, renewed his contract with Yokohama yesterday, to remain the oldest professional footballer in the world.

Miura, known as "King Kazoo" for his fiery style on the field, will play his 36th season as a professional soccer player this year.

He said in a statement: "Last season, I felt the joy of playing football at a time when the world was facing a difficult situation due to the emerging corona virus."

He added, "Personally, it was not a satisfactory season, but my ambition and enthusiasm for football are increasing."

"I will work hard every day, with the aim of helping the team win this season, by playing as many matches as possible."

Miura appeared in four meetings with his club last year, to become the oldest Japanese player in the Japanese First Division League in history, at 53 years and nine months.
