The handball world championship in Egypt will now take place without spectators.

The organizers announced this decision on Sunday evening via Twitter.

The organizers of the tournament had previously held a scheduled meeting with parts of the Egyptian government from January 13th to 31st.

"It's official: No fans at # Egypt2021," the tweet said.

Gislason's approval

The organizers are probably reacting to a protest letter from numerous players.

The captains of the European national teams around the German left winger Uwe Gensheimer had expressed their concerns about the spectator plans.

Until recently, the organizers wanted to use up to 20 percent of the audience capacity in the halls.

"I think it's great that it is handled like this," said national coach Alfred Gislason after 34:20 (19: 5) of his selection on Sunday evening in Cologne.

Germany's handball players not only celebrated a successful World Cup dress rehearsal, but also qualified ahead of schedule for the 2022 European Championship. The DHB selection leads group 2 with 8: 0 points.

The best thrower for the German team was debutant Antonio Metzner with five goals.

On Tuesday, the German team will fly to the World Cup in Egypt, where they will face Uruguay, Cape Verde and Hungary in the preliminary round.
