The years of legal dispute between Ivan Klasnic and former doctors of the Bundesliga club Werder Bremen ended on Tuesday with a settlement.

This was announced by the Bremen Higher Regional Court.

"Sportschau.de" had previously reported on it.

The authority was silent about the content of the settlement.

"At the request of the parties, the court cannot provide any further information about the content of the settlement," the statement said.

According to ARD research, the former Werder striker receives over four million euros in compensation for pain and suffering and damages.

Ivan Klasnic negotiated a total of 14 years with the help of his lawyer Matthias Teichner, initially out of court.

In 2008, after two years, he filed a lawsuit and demanded compensation for pain and suffering because he accused doctors of being responsible for his kidney damage by administering excessive pain medication.

Klasnic has now had three kidney transplants.

Originally, Klasnic had demanded a double-digit million amount from the two former club doctors.

The former striker now works as a player advisor and lives in Hamburg.

His lawyer told ARD that despite the length of the proceedings, they never thought of giving up.

Teichner considers the amount now agreed to be "more suitable for creating a feeling of justice".

However, "no money in the world can compensate for the considerable and permanent damage to my client's health".

According to the expert on medical liability law, the two responsible doctors got off lightly.

According to the report, the compensation to Klasnic is to be paid by insurance companies, the doctors themselves will not be prosecuted.

Klasnic had refrained from filing criminal charges against the doctors.
