For the rescue mission in the relegation battle, FC Schalke 04 relies on a coach retired.

The Swiss Christian Gross, who had actually already declared his career as a football teacher over, should save the bottom of the Bundesliga table from falling.

According to media reports, the 66-year-old will sign a contract with the Royal Blues until the end of the season.

Shortly after Christmas, Gross is supposed to lead the Schalke training for the first time.

On Christmas Eve, the battered club first wished “quiet and relaxing holidays despite the circumstances”.

The supervisory board cleared the way on Wednesday evening for the engagement of the new head coach, who would be the fourth person in charge of the Gelsenkirchen bank this season.

According to reports, Gross should only receive a low basic salary, but receive a generous bonus in the event of relegation.

The experienced veteran expected by many is great.

He is considered a man with a hard hand.

In his home country he won eight championships and five cup wins with the Grashoppers from Zurich and FC Basel.

In 1997, when he worked for Tottenham Hotspur, he was the first Swiss coach in the English Premier League.

Gross had his only Bundesliga engagement from 2009 to 2010 for ten months at VfB Stuttgart.

He drove the Swabians out of the relegation zone to the Europa League, but then had to go into the new season after a false start.

In Stuttgart, Gross also met Jochen Schneider, Schalke's current sports director.

For Schneider, the Swiss was the preferred candidate after he had recently failed to sign Manuel Baum as the successor to David Wagner.

If Gross fails as an emergency helper, the sports director can hardly be kept.

Major doubts should accompany the new office.

He was last employed as a coach for Young Boys Bern in European football eight years ago.

Most recently he worked in Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

He doesn't have much time to get used to at Schalke.

On January 2nd, Hertha BSC will be back in the Bundesliga.

Schalke have been without a win in the upper house of football for 29 games.

Tasmania Berlin's negative record is only two games away.
