The "Big City Club" Hertha BSC is stuck in the table cellar during the short winter break.

With its third win within a week, SC Freiburg has increased the concerns of Berliners.

In the 1: 4 defeat, coach Bruno Labbadia's team only performed well in the first 20 minutes after half-time.

With this, Labbadia can also hang his light brown coat, which he had also worn in four previous games without defeat, in the closet.

Freiburg, on the other hand, increased their distance to the relegation regions with the fifth game in a row without defeat.

Vincenzo Grifo (7th minute) headed coach Christian Streich's team into the lead, and shortly after the break Dodi Lukebakio (52nd) managed to equalize.

Then Hertha pressed, but missed the best opportunities through Niklas Stark (55th), Jordan Torunarigha (56th) and Krzysztof Piatek (57th) - and was punished for it.

Ermedin Demirovic (59th) shocked the Berliners with his first Bundesliga goal to make it 2-1, defender Manuel Gulde (67th) headed it after a corner.

The final point was set by Nils Petersen with a penalty (90 + 3).

Hertha is particularly disappointing in the first half

What must have particularly annoyed Labbadia was the anemic performance of some of its players in the first round.

Matheus Cunha was symbolic of the weak performance: The Brazilian was just playing against the ball as if he wasn't in the mood.

Labbadia roared at the national player several times and asked for a different body language.

But nothing changed after that either.

Logically, Labbadia took him out at halftime.

"He pulls himself down, doesn't perform well, pulls the team down," said Labbadia after the game.

"We could have taken him down last time against Mainz, we didn't do that," Berlin coach continued.

“We decided to do it today after it was underground for me in the first half.

He is still a young person at 21, but he has to change it as quickly as possible. "

The 21-year-old had previously initiated the Freiburg tour.

After he had carelessly lost a duel against Jonathan Schmid in midfield, the Frenchman worked his way forward on the right wing and crossed to the far post.

Grifo lurked there and headed the hosts undisturbed in the lead.

It was the sixth goal of the season for the Italian international, setting his personal goal record for an entire Bundesliga season after 13 matchdays.

Hertha seamlessly continued their sobering appearance against Mainz (0-0), where, like the opponent, they had not fired a single shot on goal.

It only got better when Cunha was no longer on the pitch.

During the break, Labbadia had replaced him with Dilrosun, which quickly had an effect.

After a few minutes, the winger prevailed in the penalty area and crossed to Lukebakio, who shot into goal from close range.

Then Hertha pressed, but Freiburg came back out of nowhere.

Individually, the Breisgauer are inferior to the ambitious capital city club in almost all positions.

But unlike the Berliners, they showed full commitment over the entire game.

That was rewarded when Demirovic came to the ball after a throw-in and was able to slip into the corner without being forced.

Then the also only sparsely guarded Gulde added after a Grifo corner.

Wolfsburg jumps to fourth place

Despite five short-term quarantine cases, VfL Wolfsburg scored 1-0 (0-0) against VfB Stuttgart at the end of the 13th matchday.

The Lower Saxony climbed to fourth place in the table.

Josip Brekalo scored the winning goal with a free kick in the 50th minute.

The Wolfsburg only announced two hours before kick-off that five players had already been quarantined the day before.

Maximilian Arnold and Jerome Roussillon tested positive for the coronavirus, Maximilian Philipp, Xaver Schlager and Tim Siersleben were classified as direct contact persons.

After consulting the health department, the trio went into domestic isolation as a precaution.
