Bundesliga: Thuram's unforgivable gesture: sent off for spitting in his opponent's face
Borussia Mönchengladbach fined the Frenchman Marcus Thuram a fine equivalent to one month's salary for spitting on an opponent, Stefan Posch, in the game that the Rhenish club lost 1-2 to Hoffenheim.
"I have spoken with Marcus for a long time and he has again apologized for his behavior. As a club we will impose a fine equivalent to one month's salary and the money will be used for social purposes," said the managing director of Gladbach,
Max Eberl
, in the entity's website.
Thuram's annual salary is estimated to be 1.8 million euros, so the fine would be around
150,000 euros
.
Until now, the highest fine imposed by Gladbach on a player had been 50,000 euros and the sanctioned one was the Argentine
Raúl Bobadilla
who in 2010 called the fourth official "son of a bitch".
Eberl further said that he had not deliberately spit but that it was an accident in the middle of an argument in French with Posch.
Thuram also awaits a sanction from the German Football League (DFL) which is estimated to be between five and six days.
