Former French coach Gérard Houllier, coach of
Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon
,
among others
, died this Monday at the age of 73, the online edition of the daily "L'Équipe" reported.
The technician had recently undergone an
operation on the aorta
in a Parisian hospital, 19 years after having suffered a dissection of that artery just before a Liverpool game, said the media.
A decade after that accident, Houllier moved away from the benches, his last experience was at the helm of
Aston Villa
in the 2010-2011 season.
Race coach, he came to the benches without having been a player and after a stint at Lens he
triumphed at PSG
, with whom he conquered the league in 1986, before becoming the assistant to Michel Hidalgo and Michel Platini in the national team.
In 1992 he was elected coach, a stage that lasted 16 months and ended with the French defeat against Bulgaria that
deprived them of the 1994 World Cup
.
After winning
the European Championship with the under-21s
of the Henry and Trézeguet generation, he was elected National Technical Director, before sitting on the Liverpool bench in 1998, a position he held until 2004, with an exceptional 2001 in which he raised four trophies , the Cup, the League Cup, the UEFA and the Super Cup.
In 2006 and 2007 it added two other French leagues, in 2006 and 2007.
We are mourning the passing of our treble-winning manager, Gerard Houllier.
The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Gerard's family and many friends.
Rest in peace, Gerard Houllier 1947-2020.
