Ajax striker and Dutch international Quincy Promes was arrested by police on Sunday.

According to national media, the player is suspected of stabbing "resulting in serious physical injury" during a family reunion last summer.

The incident took place during a family celebration at a cabin in the town of Abcoude, neighboring Amsterdam, at the end of July, according to the newspaper

"A member of the family was seriously injured and suffered in particular from very serious injuries to the knees", writes the Dutch daily.

He lodged a complaint a month ago.

, Promes had a fight with the person in question before grabbing a knife and injuring them, before the rest of the family eventually intervened to end the altercation.

The player absent from training on Sunday

A "28-year-old man has been arrested," Amsterdam police spokesman Jelmer Geerds told AFP, declining to give further details.

He only clarified that the suspect was in custody and that a decision on his release on bail would be taken no later than Sunday.

Contacted by the public television channel NOS, Ajax explained that his player had not taken part in training on Sunday, without confirming the reasons for his absence.

The Oranje striker joined Ajax in the summer of 2019 from Sevilla FC, as part of a transfer to 15 million euros.

He was one of the players summoned to the last gathering of the Dutch selection in mid-November.

Now in the hands of the police, the player faces up to four years in prison.
