Arrest of a Dutch player who stabbed one of his relatives in a family party

Dutch authorities have arrested international player Quincy Promise in connection with a stabbing attack at a family gathering earlier this year, according to a local news report on Sunday.

The popular newspaper Die Telegraph said that 28-year-old Ajax Amsterdam striker Promis "is suspected of committing an assault that resulted in serious bodily injury."

The newspaper pointed out that the accident occurred at a family party in the scenic town of Abcode outside Amsterdam, in late July.

It pointed out that "a relative sustained a serious knee injury, among other injuries" in the accident.

It is suspected that Promise got into a fight after an altercation with relatives and other family members intervened immediately, according to the same newspaper, which added that one of his relatives had brought charges against him a month ago.

Amsterdam police spokesman Yilmer Gerds said that "a 28-year-old man has been arrested," but he declined to give further details.

The spokesman added that the suspect was in custody and a decision would be made on his release on bail later Sunday.

Ajax could not be reached for comment, but NOS said the club had confirmed that Promise was not in training Sunday.

Promis, who was born in Amsterdam and known for his speed and technical style of play, joined Ajax last year, coming from Seville, Spain, in a transfer deal worth 15 million euros.

Prior to that, Promis played for Russia's Spartak Moscow, where he was named the best soccer player in Russia in 2017. He made his international debut with the Dutch national team in March 2014 against France.
