Five Dutch soccer players have a chance to be included in the 2020 world team. Sari van Veenendaal, Stefanie van der Gragt, Daniëlle van de Donk, Lieke Martens and Vivianne Miedema are among the 55 nominees.

The list has been drawn up by the international players' union FIFPRO and the world football association FIFA.

All professional footballers can vote.

Next Thursday, the 'best' team of 2020 will be presented at the FIFA gala The Best, which is being held online due to the corona crisis.

Van Veenendaal previously received a place in the 2019 world team. The PSV keeper, who came over from Atlético Madrid last summer, was also named the best goalkeeper in the world last year.

That happened after a strong performance at the World Cup, where the Orange women reached the final.

Miedema, who has had an impressive year at Arsenal, has not only been nominated for the world team, but is also one of eleven candidates for the prize for the best football player of the year.

She has competition for that from Lucy Bronze, Pernille Harder and Wendie Renard, among others.

Virgil van Dijk, the captain of Orange, is in the race for the title of best footballer of the year among the men.

Sarina Wiegman, the national coach of the Orange Women, competes for the title of best coach of a women's team.

The nominees for the 2020 male world team will be announced later.

The FIFA gala was initially scheduled for September, but was then postponed due to the corona crisis.

Other elections, such as the presentation of the Golden Ball by the French magazine

France Football

, will not take place at all in 2020.
