It's been five days since Romain Grosjean's crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix, but it remains the most talked about event in Formula 1.

The miraculous rescue of the rider after a collision with a barrier and the resulting fire is overgrown with new details even five days after the incident, which fortunately ended without tragic consequences.

On December 2, Grosjean was discharged from the Bahrain Defense Forces hospital, where he was taken after the accident.

He remained in the kingdom to continue the treatment of hand burns at home.

He was allowed to remove some of his bandages, and the Haas pilot showed his social media followers what his hand looked like.

My right hand this morning.

The happiness I had when I was told that I didn't need the full dressing anymore and could use my finger was huge.

Almost cried.

The next day, Grosjean returned to the track paddock, where another Formula 1 Sakhir Grand Prix will take place over the weekend.

He had the opportunity to meet with the team, which will have a new roster next season, and have a few words with other pilots.

But first of all, Grosjean wanted to thank the people who saved his life.

The French pilot talked to firefighters, marshals and doctors who became the protagonists of Sunday's race.

Grosjean was especially grateful to the rescuer who ran up to him first and began to put out the fire.

A heart-warming moment ❤️

The pilot also owed much of his salvation to his helmet, which withstood the fire and did not allow him to suffocate.

Bell, which makes protective gear for Formula 1 riders, said the helmet was designed specifically to protect its wearer in such a dangerous situation.

“The helmet worked exactly as expected under the circumstances.

In terms of fire resistance, everything was fine.

The visor was fine.

The only thing that has melted is the tear-off films that are glued to the outside of the visor.

Because of this, when the fire was picked up, the visor became very opaque, especially on the left side.

When you are not moving, the circulation of air entering the helmet from the outside is extremely small, and this is very important for us.

Bell is proud to say that it not only meets standard expectations, but exceeds them.

Because in such an accident, when a person spends more than 25 seconds on fire, you can breathe hot gases and vapors that will damage the lungs.

And that didn't happen.

Nothing got inside the helmet, ”Bell CEO Stephen Cohen told RaceFans.

All this time, fans of auto racing were interested in the question of what caused the accident.

Grosjean flew off the track after a collision with Daniil Kvyat, whom the Frenchman himself cut for no apparent reason.

The Haas pilot admitted that he had not seen the Russian, and had to move in his direction because of the debris on the track.

“Everything happened too quickly, but I didn't know what hurt Kvyat.

I did not see him.

I'm sorry that I cut him, but he was in my blind spot at the exit of the first corner.

I looked in the mirror twice because I got out of the turn before the others.

There were debris on the left, so I started to move to the right.

It seemed to me that there was no one there.

At first there was a light touch, then a collision with a barrier, which did not seem too strong to me.

I closed my eyes, "- quoted by Grosjean Grandpx.

Kvyat himself, who became an unwitting accomplice of the accident, also commented on the incident.

He admitted that at first he was very angry with Grosjean for his maneuver, but quickly cooled down when he saw its consequences.

“I saw him approaching, and there was little I could do to avoid it.

Of course, this probably happens on the first lap.

At first I got angry when I saw that another car drove across the track.

But immediately after that, I looked in the mirror and saw an explosion and a fire.

Strange emotions, a strange feeling gripped me, ”the Russian pilot admitted.

“In my entire racing career, I have never seen anything like it.

To be honest, I was a little shocked to see in life what you see only in the movies.

When I got to the pit lane, I was, of course, worried about Romain.

But then, fortunately, they told me and showed me footage showing that he was fine.

Then I breathed a sigh of relief, ”said Kvyat.

Some time after the accident, Grosjean found the strength to tell what happened after the collision with the barrier.

He admitted that he was afraid to repeat the fate of the Austrian pilot Niki Lauda, who in 1976 also survived a terrible disaster and was badly burned.

The Frenchman noted that he could not immediately get out of the cockpit and he tried to cover the flame with his hands in order to survive.

“Everything turned orange, it was very strange, but when the film on the helmet caught fire, I realized that everything was on fire.

I tried to get out, but I couldn't.

I told myself that this is impossible, that I cannot finish like this.

I tried to get out again, but to no avail.

He sat down again.

It’s an unusual feeling to see death as close as it was to me.

I sat and wondered which part of the body would light up first and whether it would hurt.

I was overdriven by 53G, so naturally I was somewhat confused.

But then I started to struggle with all my might because my left leg got stuck under the pedal.

I told myself that I was not dead yet, I tried to cover the flame with my hands, the gloves became completely black, it hurt.

I knew that I was burning my hands, but it was in order to survive, ”Grosjean described the accident.

The Frenchman added that he wants to return behind the wheel of the car soon and end the Formula 1 season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

According to him, it is important for him to check whether he is afraid to participate in races and whether he still has a desire to compete further.

True, if his left arm does not heal completely, Grosjean will still miss the last race of the season.

As for plans for the future, he also does not exclude that he will spend the whole next year on vacation, which he could not have imagined before.

If Grosjean still ends the season ahead of schedule, then in Abu Dhabi he could be replaced by Mick Schumacher, whom Haas signed for next year.

The German pilot, who will definitely take part in Friday's free practice, said that he was ready to make his full debut in Formula 1 in a week.

Also competing for Grosjean are Russian Nikita Mazepin and Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi, who will replace the Frenchman at the Sahir Grand Prix while Haas newcomers compete in Formula 2.

This issue, according to the head of the American team, Gunther Steiner, will not be decided until next Monday.
