Real Madrid no longer has the right to qualify for the knockout phase of the Champions League.

Coach Zinedine Zidane's team lost 2-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday-evening in Ukraine.

Real was close to the opening goal against Shakhtar in Kiev after five minutes, but Marco Asensio's bet ended up on the post.

In the remainder of the first half, goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin kept the home team going with saves on attempts by Karim Benzema and Asensio.

Early in the second half Shakhtar was accurate.

Dentinho took advantage of a misunderstanding in the Madrid defense and placed the ball in the right corner.

Ten minutes later, Viktor Kovalenko had a big chance to make it 2-0, but the midfielder's shot was blocked.

Seven minutes before the end it was the second time for the home team.

Substitute Manor Solomon shot the ball hard into the short corner from the edge of the box.

Real did not manage to bring back the tension after that.

Due to the defeat, Real loses second place in group B to Shakhtar.

Both teams have seven points after five games, but the Ukrainians are one place higher due to a better mutual result.

In October Shakhtar also won in Madrid (2-3).

Real, which has never been eliminated in the Champions League group stage, is now dependent on results at Borussia Mönchengladbach-Internazionale (started at 9 p.m.) and Internazionale-Shakhtar Donetsk (Wednesday next week).

Gladbach leads with eight points in this group and Inter is at the bottom with two points.
