Violent clashes broke out between fans and the police before the wake for Argentine football legend Diego Maradona.

Officials closed the line of mourners on Thursday to pay their last respects to Maradona in the government palace.

Disappointed fans then attacked officials, the police used water cannons, as seen on television.

Maradona died on Wednesday at the age of 60, his coffin was laid out in the Casa Rosada in the historic center of Buenos Aires.

Thousands of followers have been saying goodbye to their idol since the early hours of the morning.

According to his family's will, Maradona is to be buried on Thursday in a private cemetery in a suburb of Buenos Aires, local media reported.

Footballers and companions from all over the world paid tribute to Maradona, including Michel Platini, one of the Argentine's greatest rivals in the Italian league in the 1980s.

Platini told the AP news agency that Maradona was "the greatest football fanatic".
