Diego Maradona died on Wednesday at the age of sixty, the Argentine Football Association confirms.
The football legend has succumbed to cardiac arrest.
Maradona was already in hospital earlier this month.
He was then operated on for a blood clot in his brain.
He was recovering from surgery at his home in Tigre when he suffered cardiac arrest, which was fatal to him.
Maradona, who was active as a player from 1976 to 1997, is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time.
He was the star player of the Argentina team that won the world title in 1986.
In a club context Maradona was active for FC Barcelona, Sevilla and Napoli, among others. Especially at the latter club he became a legend by leading the club to the league title in 1987 and 1991.
