Anele Ngcongca

, who played in Belgium and France and wore the shirt of the South African team, died on Monday at the age of 33 in a traffic accident, as confirmed by the South African football federation.

The event occurred early in the morning in the coastal city of Durban (east) and has left the South African football world in shock.

"This 2020 has been a terrible year, economically and socially, and we have lost many of our loved ones. Anele's death sums up this dreadful year," said South African Football Association (SAFA) President

Danny Jordaan

. it's a statement.

Ngcongca died in the same place where the accident occurred, allegedly after being thrown from the vehicle.

A woman who was traveling with him and who was driving the wrecked car - apparently the player's agent according to the South African press - remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The exact details of the accident are not known, but the president of SAFA, in his statement of condolences, recalled that the roads of South Africa claim too many deaths that could be avoided if traffic regulations were respected.

"We have lost several of our players to road accidents and I cannot stress enough the importance of observing speed limits and other driving regulations," Jordaan said.

Ngcongca began his professional career at FC Fortune in South Africa and later played in Belgium for Koninklijke Racing Club Genk (KRC Genk) and in France for Espérance Sportive Troyes Aube Champagne.

He then returned to South Africa to wear the jersey for one of the country's biggest clubs, the Mamelodi Sundowns, for four years.

He was expected to appear shortly as a signing for the next season of AmaZulu Football Club Durban.

With a reputation for versatile defense, Ngcongca was international with Bafana Bafana (nickname of the South African soccer team) on more than fifty occasions and was part of the national team in the 2010 Soccer World Cup, played in his country and won Spain.
