Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and Yamaha Motor Racing have confirmed British rider
Cal Crutchlow
as the Japanese manufacturer's test rider for the 2021 season.
Starting from the MotoGP test scheduled in Sepang (Malaysia), from February 14 to 16, 2021, Crutchlow will pilot the YZR-M1 and will also participate in the
official IRTA
(Competition Team Association) tests and other private tests of Yamaha, with the aim of helping Yamaha engineers in the development of their MotoGP bike.
Crutchlow could contest a test as a guest rider if Yamaha considers it appropriate or as a substitute rider if any of the official riders suffers a mishap.
The Briton won the 2009 World Supersport Championship with Yamaha and was a rider in the World Superbike Championship the following year, when he collected ten podiums, including three victories, to finish fifth in the general classification and open the opportunity to debut in MotoGP in 2011 with the Yamaha satellite team, where he gained experience during the first three years of the ten he has accumulated in the premier class.
In the statement issued by Yamaha they also have a few lines to thank "sincerely Jorge Lorenzo, Yamaha Factory Racing test driver in 2020, for his availability, support and understanding during this year of impediments by covid-19".
"Although external circumstances prevented this association from reaching its 2020 goals, the respect between the two parties remains unchanged and Yamaha wishes Jorge all the best for the future," the Yamaha note highlights.
