Lars Lagerbäck took Iceland to a historic European Championship 2016, the country's first major championship ever.

And after Lagerbäck thanked himself, Iceland went to its first World Cup two years later.

On Thursday night, it looked like a Swede would once again take Iceland to a European Championship play-off.

Erik Hamrén took over the small island nation just over two years ago, and after the corona pandemic postponed the entire European Championship play-off, the qualifiers ended today, more than six months later than planned.

The goalkeeper dropped the ball

Away against Hungary, Iceland made it 1-0 early in the match.

After 11 minutes, Gylfi Sigurdsson sent a free kick in high over the penalty box.

The free kick itself was not remarkable, but the Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulácsi stood for a giant board and dropped the ball into goal.

And for a long, long time, the European Championship ticket looked like Iceland.

But with two minutes left of regular time, Hungary equalized through Loic Nego.

And in overtime also came 2-1 for Hungary with a shot from outside.

Dominik Szoboslai was the name of the great hero for Hungary who celebrated wildly after the final whistle.

Hungary now ends up in what really is the "Group of Death".

France, Portugal and Germany are waiting for the European Championship finals to be decided this summer.
